Below is a sample roadmap to help you understand how the MFA thesis unfolds over your two years in the program.
First Year of Study

- Writing workshops (BCWRIT 500, 501, and 502)
- Poetics seminars (BCWRIT 510, 511, 512)
May:
Submit an online Second-Year Transition form, outlining your goals for your thesis and artistic development, and your nominations for up to 3 MFA faculty members to serve as your thesis advisor or second reader. At the end of Spring quarter, students will be paired with an MFA thesis advisor and a Second Reader whose expertise aligns with their individual plan.
June:
Schedule a meeting with your thesis advisor before the last day of Spring quarter to establish a work plan for the summer and the following academic year. Keep in mind that thesis advisors are often not available over the summer months, so consider reaching out as soon as your thesis advisor has been assigned.
Submit a 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Completion Plan which will guide the IAS Graduate Office in setting up your independent study credits and enable you to register. Fill out the 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Completion Plan and return it to iasgrad@uw.edu as soon as possible and no later than the last day of Spring Quarter.
Summer months:
Initiate your 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Completion Plan and complete planned activities as outlined.
Second Year of Study
足彩app哪个是正规的sis work in the second year will be structured by enrollment in independent study courses with the 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisor:
- BCWRIT 700 Creative Writing 足彩app哪个是正规的sis
- BCWRIT 599 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Practicum
足彩app哪个是正规的s’ independent work is also supported by involvement in MFA Salons.
September:
Review the MFA Salon schedule for Autumn and Winter quarters. Plan to attend a minimum of five Salon dates.
Select two Salon dates to present your in-progress thesis work and get feedback from MFA students and faculty. Consult with your 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisor and Second Reader before signing up to determine if they can attend your selected Salon dates.
Ongoing (Fall, Winter & Spring quarters):
Continue implementing your 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Completion Plan as outlined. Meet with your 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisor to track progress and adjust your completion plan where needed.
Attend scheduled MFA Salons as a listener/commentator or presenter.
March:
Submit your Master’s Degree Request. 足彩app哪个是正规的s graduating in Spring 2026 can submit this online form starting Monday, March 30.
April:
Monday, April 6: First draft of thesis due to 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisor.
Tuesday, April 14: Deadline to submit a Master’s Degree Request if you wish to be included in Commencement ceremony materials. Make changes to your name listing, if needed.
May:
Express your intent to read at the MFA Spring Festival. Submit your speaker bio and thesis presentation title to the IAS Graduate Office using the online form.
Friday, May 8: Revised 足彩app哪个是正规的sis due to 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisor and Second Reader.
Wednesday, May 13: Set up an Electronic 足彩app哪个是正规的sis/Dissertation (ETD) account. Review ETD resources and explore submission requirements and options for thesis publication and access on the ETD guide: https://guides.lib.uw.edu/research/etds
Friday, May 22: 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisor and Second Reader provide written feedback on your thesis if your revised draft was submitted by May 8 due date.
Thursday, May 28 (4 PM – 8 PM): All graduating students must attend MFA Spring Festival rehearsal and tech check. Location TBA.
June:
Review Graduation Requirements on the UW Graduate School website. Visit the UW Bothell Commencement webpage for ceremony information.
Friday, June 5: Final thesis due to 足彩app哪个是正规的sis Advisors with a filled-in copy of the “Master’s Supervisory Committee Approval Form.”
Please note: You must upload a completed and signed Master’s Supervisory Committee Approval Form when you submit your thesis electronically in the ETD Administrator. 足彩app哪个是正规的 form certifies that your faculty committee (thesis advisor and second reader) have examined the final copy of the thesis, have found it complete and satisfactory, and confirm that any and all required revisions required have been made. 足彩app哪个是正规的s who are experiencing difficulties collecting physical ink signatures (unable to access scanners, printers, postal delays, etc.) should refer to page 2 of the Master’s Supervisory Committee Approval Form for special instructions.
Saturday, June 6: MFA Spring Festival
Friday, June 12, (5 PM): Last chance to submit a Master’s Degree Request. Missing this deadline will require you to enroll in Summer Quarter to submit your thesis and graduate.
Sunday, June 14: UW Bothell Commencement
