{"id":8858,"date":"2011-09-07T16:34:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-07T16:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=8858"},"modified":"2026-04-08T18:07:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T18:07:31","slug":"identifying-and-speaking-with-the-student-in-distress","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/student-affairs\/care-team\/care-team-resources\/identifying-and-speaking-with-the-student-in-distress","title":{"rendered":"Identifying and speaking with the student in distress"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identifying behaviors of students in distress:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excessive procrastination and poorly prepared work, especially if inconsistent with previous work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced class attendance with little or no work completed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependency (e.g., the student who hangs around or makes excessive appointments during office hours).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listlessness, lack of energy, or frequently falling asleep in class.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marked changes in personal hygiene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impaired speech and disjointed thoughts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated requests for special consideration such as deadline extensions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threats to others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expressing suicidal thoughts or referring to suicide as a current option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive weight gain or loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated interference with effective class management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequent or high levels of irritable, unruly, abrasive, or aggressive behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unable to make decisions despite your repeated efforts to clarify or encourage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bizarre behavior that is obviously inappropriate for the situation (e.g., talking to something\/someone that is not present).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appearing overly nervous, tense or tearful.<br>\n\t <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suggestions for speaking with a student in distress:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Talk to the student in private.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Express concern.
