Undergraduates will have the opportunity to join three faculty members developing microbiosensors coupled with wireless transmission. This research might lead, for example, to an electronic patch that could continuously monitor a person\u2019s blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tEach summer for three years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1757395\">Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant<\/a> will support a group of students \u2014 three local and seven from across the country \u2014 in a 10-week intensive training and research experience. By immersing themselves in work on low-cost, comfortable monitoring devices, students will develop research skills and may become more interested in graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/tadesse-ghirmai-180228a-002.jpg\" alt=\"Tadesse Ghirmai\" class=\"wp-image-25859\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tadesse Ghirmai \/ Marc Studer photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u201cAnother very important factor is to motivate women and minorities to pursue science and engineering,\u201d said Associate Professor Tadesse Ghirmai, the principal investigator for the REU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tGhirmai applied for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/crssprgm\/reu\/\">NSF grant<\/a> with Assistant Professor Hung Cao and Assistant Professor Geetha Thamilarasu. Ghirmai and Cao are in the engineering and mathematics division, and Thamilarasu is in the computing and software systems division, all in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering &amp; Mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tResearch in biomedical devices is particularly well-suited to UW Bothell\u2019s interdisciplinary approach and to the expertise of all three faculty members: Cao\u2019s  device fabrication, Ghirmai\u2019s signal processing and Thamilarasu\u2019s data security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t足彩app哪个是正规的y\u2019ve been helped in starting the REU by the math REU that UW Bothell hosted the past three summers under the direction of Professors Jennifer McCloud-Mann and Casey Mann. 足彩app哪个是正规的 new REU team has six projects:<\/p>\n\n\n<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\t&bull; fabrication of flexible microelectrode array patches for bio-potential recording,<br>\n\t&bull; miniaturization of recording and communication circuits on flexible substrates, <br>\n\t&bull; filtering and classifying electrocardiogram (ECG) signals,<br>\n\t&bull; extracting fetal ECG from the combined fetal-maternal ECG,<br>\n\t&bull; secure &ldquo;internet of things&rdquo; connected health care, and<br>\n\t&bull; machine learning-based anomaly detection.<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/geetha-thamilarasu-180302c-002.jpg\" alt=\"Geetha Thamilarasu\" class=\"wp-image-25860\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Geetha Thamilarasu \/ Marc Studer photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tEach faculty member will be responsible for the students in two projects. Cao will welcome the students into his research lab where tiny electronics can be created for monitoring heart and brain signals. Ghirmai is working on a way to separate a fetal ECG from the mother\u2019s. Thamilarasu studies how to keep such signals secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u201cNext generation medical devices offer significant healthcare benefits, but if these devices are developed with no security features, they can be easily compromised, raising security and privacy concerns that can potentially lead to serious medical consequences,\u201d said Thamilarasu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t足彩app哪个是正规的 quality of REU students brings prestige to UW Bothell and helps create a culture that encourages more students to pursue a doctorate, Cao said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/hung-cao-170228a-013.jpg\" alt=\"Hung Cao\" class=\"wp-image-25861\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hung Cao \/ Marc Studer photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u201c足彩app哪个是正规的y\u2019re going to bring energy and motivation to our current students on campus,\u201d Cao said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tREU students will receive a $5,000 stipend plus campus housing.
