When it comes to crowing on about his research,\u202fDr.\u202fDoug Wacker, associate professor\u00a0in\u00a0UW Bothell\u2019s\u00a0School of STEM<\/a>,\u202fcan be forgiven\u202f\u2014\u202fhe spends his time studying\u202fcorvids, the family of birds\u202fthat includes\u00a0crows.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u00a0said\u00a0he\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0planned to focus on crows\u00a0when he started working\u00a0on campus\u00a0in 2012.\u00a0But when\u202fhe noticed so many\u202fof\u202fthe birds\u202froosting on campus, he realized he had found\u202fhis\u202f\u201ccaw-ling.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wacker\u202falso\u00a0thought\u202fthe crows offered\u202fthe perfect opportunity for undergraduate students to do easily accessible research, leading to a regular \u201ccrow count.\u201d\u202fOn one evening each year,\u202fWacker joined\u202fwith\u202fstudent researchers and community members\u202fto count the number of birds coming to campus, with\u202fparticipants\u202fstrategically placed in a ring around UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u202fbegan\u202fseeing\u202fconsistent counts of more than 14,000\u202fcrows\u202fin 2016.\u202fThat number peaked in 2022\u202fwith\u202faround 20,000 crows\u202feach evening.\u202fAt that point, the sky turned black\u202fat dusk, when the massive\u202fmurder\u202fcame home to roost. Just one year later,\u202fhowever,\u202fthe crow numbers dwindled dramatically to fewer\u202fthan 10,000 crows.\u202fBy\u202fJanuary 2025,\u202fWacker\u202fsaid that\u202fthe number was reduced to\u202fzero.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
