Imagine what\u202fit\u2019s\u202flike to be a bat. Are you flying through the night sky along a river in search of insects to eat? Hanging upside down in a cave, roosting with the rest of your colony? Or\u00a0perhaps you\u2019re chowing down on a mango high up in a tree, deep in the Amazon Rainforest.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever\u202fyou\u2019re\u202fpicturing,\u202fit\u2019s\u202funique to you. Considering what is \u201cbat-like\u201d is a thought or idea colored by your own knowledge and experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as it turns out, \u201cbat-like\u201d could also be a place \u2014 a psychological location where the\u00a0mind can\u00a0go.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his\u202flatest paper, Dr. Jin-Kyu Jung explores this idea as a creative re-interpretation of\u00a0an area of study called psychogeography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researching across disciplines<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jung is a professor in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s\u202fSchool of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences<\/a>.\u202fAs an urban geographer and planner, his research\u202ffocuses on exploring the critical, qualitative\u202fand creative possibilities of geographic visualization in understanding socio-spatial processes as well as in understanding the politics of urban space and community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little more than a decade ago, he ventured into a new area of research when he began collaborating with Dr. Ted Hiebert, an artist and former IAS faculty member who currently serves as chair of Toronto Metropolitan University\u2019s School of Image Arts. 足彩app哪个是正规的 pair\u202fhave\u202fbeen exploring how to merge geographic and artistic representations of information and analysis \u2014 particularly as it relates to psychogeography,\u00a0research into\u00a0a person\u2019s psychological experiences in relation to a place.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018What is it like?\u2019 is an experiment in psychogeography that takes the literal idea that thoughts and ideas might be seen as places we can go to,\u201d Jung said. \u201cIt attempts to start discussions about what this reconceptualization of the mind might mean.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking \u2018What is it like?\u2019<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In this\u00a0experiment, participants talked about bats and attended a lecture given by a subject matter expert \u2014 Dr. Sharlene Santana, an associate professor at\u00a0the\u00a0UW\u2019s College of Arts & Sciences. 足彩app哪个是正规的n, Jung and Hiebert asked participants to imagine what\u202fit\u2019s\u202flike to be a bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why, specifically, a bat? 足彩app哪个是正规的 project was in some sense a critical response to a 1974 essay by researcher Thomas Nagel. In the essay, titled \u201cWhat is it like to be a\u202fbat?,\u201d Nagel suggested that humans are unequipped to think about the subjective character of experience without relying on the imagination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a\u202fgeovisualization\u202fproject, the end goal is not just to imagine but to constitute the imagination as holistic, creative and qualitative forms of data \u2014 and\u00a0how might we map the experience of imagining without ignoring its content and quality,\u201d Jung said. \u201cWe are not so much trying to map the imagination as we are trying to scaffold the act of imagining by purposefully delineating imaginary engagement.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering a non-human application<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In their paper,\u202f\u201cMore-Than-Human Psychogeography: On \u2018Bat like\u2019 Places and Imaginary\u00a0Geographie,<\/a>\u201d\u202fpublished in the\u202fLivingmaps\u202fReview journal, Jung and Hiebert share the findings of their experiment. 足彩app哪个是正规的y also look at their research from a different kind of non-human imagination: artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

足彩app哪个是正规的y question whether AI has the capacity to imagine \u2014 whether prompted with \u201cWhat it is like to be a\u202fbat?\u201d or even \u201cWhat is it like to be human?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although AI could conjure a manifestation of data at a particular point in virtual and algorithmic space,\u202fit\u00a0is\u202fnot quite the\u202fsame thing as \u201cimagination.\u201d At least, not as we\u202fexperience\u202fit, they wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne might imagine all the possible data in the world \u2014 synthesized, perhaps, as\u202fonly intelligent machines and algorithms might do \u2014 forming a complete picture that nevertheless lacks that crucial dimension of\u202f\u2018what it is like.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the measurable\u202fsomethings<\/em>\u202fare accounted for, yet one still evades capture: the something<\/em> for which there is nothing it is like.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this lack of a special \u201csomething,\u201d AI does still make things up, they noted. 足彩app哪个是正规的se \u201challucinations,\u201d as they\u2019re coined, are not considered an act of imagination, however, but a problem \u2014 a bug to be fixed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engaging in two parts<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As\u00a0Jung and Hiebert\u00a0noted in their paper, \u201cimaginary data\u201d requires imagination in order to\u202fengage with it. This means that the question of \u201cwhat is it like?\u201d is posed not only to the participant but\u202falso to\u202fthe observer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
