{"id":33431,"date":"2026-02-13T14:41:32","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T22:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33431"},"modified":"2026-02-18T09:32:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T17:32:19","slug":"advancing-justice-centered-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/02\/13\/advancing-justice-centered-education","title":{"rendered":"Advancing justice-centered education\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Taking\u00a0over\u00a0as director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goodladinstitute.org\/\">Goodlad Institute\u00a0for Educational Renewal<\/a>,\u00a0mathematics professor Dr. Allison Hintz knew she stood on big\u00a0shoulders.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her first&nbsp;order of business:&nbsp;return to&nbsp;the work of Dr. John&nbsp;Goodlad, the renowned educational researcher&nbsp;for whom the&nbsp;institute&nbsp;is&nbsp;named.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;doing so,&nbsp;Hintz&nbsp;came to&nbsp;more deeply appreciate&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;and take fresh inspiration from \u2014&nbsp;his profound influence on the field of education.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough many large-scale research projects and influential books, Dr. Goodlad strengthened the democratic purposes of schooling, deepening the understandings of how schools work and how they could improve,\u201d Hintz said. \u201cHe&nbsp;created centers for educational research, arguing that scholarship must&nbsp;be connected to real classrooms.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u00a0stepped into the\u00a0Goodlad\u00a0Institute\u00a0directorship\u00a0in August 2025, after\u00a015 years\u00a0as\u00a0one\u00a0of its community of scholars.\u00a0She\u00a0is only\u00a0the institute\u2019s third director since its\u00a02008\u00a0founding,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2018\/11\/08\/goodlad-institute-pr\">following in the footsteps<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Drs. Carrie Tzou and\u00a0Tom Bellamy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Community&nbsp;engaged&nbsp;to inspire&nbsp;change<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hintz is especially&nbsp;keen&nbsp;to&nbsp;continue the momentum of&nbsp;the institute\u2019s many projects&nbsp;advancing&nbsp;justice-centered education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&nbsp;are deepening commitment&nbsp;to&nbsp;community-engaged scholarship,\u201d she&nbsp;said. \u201cEducational renewal requires deep partnership among schools, universities and communities working together. 足彩app哪个是正规的&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;Institute exists to support collaborations that advance community-engaged scholarship through action.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u00a0is a principal investigator in\u00a0one such\u00a0effort,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/03\/changing-the-face-of-education\">LEADER Initiative<\/a>. This multi-year collaboration\u00a0brings together 14 partners\u00a0in a\u00a0shared effort to increase and sustain the racial,\u00a0ethnic\u00a0and linguistic representation of the educator workforce.\u00a0\u201cChildren in schools may not see themselves in their teachers,\u201d Hintz\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While teaching&nbsp;staffs&nbsp;in Washington are&nbsp;primarily white,&nbsp;she added, the student&nbsp;population of&nbsp;K-12 schools is much richer in diversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address this imbalance, the LEADER Initiative&nbsp;includes&nbsp;community partners such as&nbsp;local&nbsp;tribes, area school districts and two professional teacher training programs.&nbsp;Collectively, their&nbsp;reach extends to teachers, community-based organizations in&nbsp;the&nbsp;region&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;and&nbsp;across the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的&nbsp;potential impact of&nbsp;this group\u2019s&nbsp;work&nbsp;also&nbsp;has national implications, Hintz said.&nbsp;\u201cYou can make local change, and you can inspire broader change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;We are deepening commitment to community-engaged&nbsp;scholarship. ideological boundaries within a new academic and professional context,\u201d said Bian.&nbsp;\u201cThis project will examine how they construct and negotiate their professional identities&nbsp;in this process.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;scholar Dr. Maxine Alloway, director of teacher education in SES, is partnering with local elementary schools and school districts to design and&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;internships for UW Bothell students on the path to becoming teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a part of Dr. Hintz&#8217;s&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;Scholars professional learning community has helped me connect with school districts through participants&#8217; established partnerships and has offered personal support as I navigate a new professional context,\u201d\u202fsaid Alloway, who joined the SES in September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet other&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;scholars are&nbsp;actively&nbsp;finding new ways to meet K-12 students\u2019 diverse are&nbsp;creating&nbsp;an essential&nbsp;bridge between research and hands-on classroom practice&nbsp;\u2014 just as John Goodlad envisioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the midst of myriad roles and responsibilities, the Goodlad Institute provides a space&nbsp;for UW Bothell faculty to dream, design and&nbsp;create&nbsp;the work that&nbsp;inspires both them and&nbsp;their community
