Liliana Flores was always drawn to math and science. Growing up just north of Seattle, she knew while taking a middle school science class with one of her favorite teachers that she might someday want to teach in the field, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it came time to apply to colleges, Flores hoped to find a small campus community with opportunities for further STEM exploration, which she did at the University of Washington Bothell. She then planned to major in Mechanical Engineering \u2014 that was, until\u202fher sophomore year when\u202fshe got her first taste of astrophysics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn a whim, I took an Intro to Astronomy course, and from then on, I was hooked,\u201d she said.\u202f\u201cAstrophysics\u202fis\u202fso broad.\u202fLiterally, the\u202fexpanse of the universe is your limit.\u202f足彩app哪个是正规的re\u2019s\u202fso much to explore and so many unanswered questions and ways to expand on what we know, and that really\u202fexcited me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flores graduated with a\u202fbachelor\u2019s in Physics\u202fin 2025. Today, she continues to support the research of Dr. Paola Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo, associate professor in\u00a0the\u202fSchool of STEM<\/a>, while setting her sights on her own future as an educator in physics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shining enthusiasm for astrophysics<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo first met Flores in the Introduction to Astronomy course she taught in 2023. She admired Flores\u2019 interest both in science and in sharing science knowledge with others. This was especially apparent during Astronomy Day that year, when students\u202fpresented on\u202fvarious topics to a public audience at a library in the city of Bothell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI noticed Liliana\u2019s spark, her curiosity, every time we discussed a new topic about the universe,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo said. \u201cShe was outstanding at communicating science to the public at the Bothell library. She was relatable, engaging and able to explain difficult concepts without dumbing them down for the audience.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her enthusiasm and her brilliance, Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo added, led her to invite Flores to join her research group at the end of that quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Flores, this all made a great impact on her. \u201cProfessor Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo\u2019s mentorship was everything to me,\u201d she said. \u201cThat first astronomy course I took and the\u202fresearch it\u202fled to\u202fchanged\u202fthe entire trajectory of my education. What\u2019s\u202fgreat about her mentorship is that she sees what you\u2019re capable\u202fof,\u202fand she pushes you to attain that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would also say that being able to see someone who looks like me, a Hispanic woman, in science academia flourishing and leading students was really cool\u202ffor me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An out-of-this-world experience<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Another thing that makes Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo an invaluable mentor, Flores said, is the way she helps connect students to scholarships,\u202fgrants\u202fand opportunities to learn more outside the classroom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

足彩app哪个是正规的 most exciting opportunity that Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo encouraged her to go after, she recalled, was the James Webb Space Telescope workshop at the Space Telescope Science Institute, a premier space observatory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a big deal to me, and I was really excited,\u201d she said.\u202f\u201cAt first, I\u202fdefinitely had\u202fsome imposter syndrome. It was a bit intimidating, especially talking to people\u202fin\u202fvarious stages of their careers. But after spending time with them in the workshop and in the dorm-style environment, I became more comfortable and was able to build friendships within the program and connect with people from all over the world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the two-week summer program, Flores learned about the capabilities of the JWST and the background of various transient phenomena, such as supernovae and black hole mergers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was very proud to have been able to go, and it really changed my outlook on what I wanted to do and strengthened my confidence in myself and my abilities,\u201d Flores said. \u201cIt was a great experience to learn about all these topics and then come back to the research group and share what I had learned.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One new skill that proved to be especially valuable was how to\u202fwrite\u202fresearch proposals for using the telescope. After she returned from the summer workshop, Flores and Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo worked on a proposal of their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A journey into the unknown<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo\u2019s research group study quasars, a phenomenon where gas and dust from extremely luminous galactic cores fall into a supermassive black hole, which can sometimes produce winds known as outflows. 足彩app哪个是正规的se extreme and powerful outflows, Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo noted, might be a key missing piece of the puzzle of how galaxies form\u202fand evolve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submitting a scientific proposal is no small feat, Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo said, and Flores\u2019 workshop experience was crucial to the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, she joined Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo in Edinburgh, Scotland, where they presented their work as part of a collaboration with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. She is\u202falso working on her own first-authorship paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo me, truly, students like Liliana make our work worthwhile,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo said. \u201cUW Bothell’s mission to expand access to education for communities across Washington state that might not otherwise have that opportunity is deeply important to me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is personal: I decided to become an astronomer the first time I had access to a research experience as an undergraduate, so I love bringing that experience to other students. And sometimes, such as in the case of Liliana, it helps them find their passion as well.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the research team waits to hear back on its proposal, Flores is looking ahead to what lies next for her. She has\u202fapplied to several post-graduate physics and astronomy programs so she can continue her education in the fall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her\u202fultimate goal\u202fis still to teach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love learning and teaching and exploring the best ways to learn,\u201d Flores said. \u201cWhen I tell people I do astrophysics research, I often hear, \u2018Oh, I could never do that, that\u2019s so hard.\u2019 But\u202fI\u2019ve\u202ffound that it depends on how you\u2019re learning and how\u202fit\u2019s\u202ftaught to you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
