{"id":33349,"date":"2026-01-30T15:35:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T23:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33349"},"modified":"2026-02-13T12:40:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T20:40:35","slug":"a-collective-mourning-and-celebration-of-cultural-loss-and-rebirth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/01\/30\/a-collective-mourning-and-celebration-of-cultural-loss-and-rebirth","title":{"rendered":"A\u00a0collective\u00a0mourning\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and celebration \u2014\u00a0of cultural loss and rebirth\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Whether moving to the big city for a job or to a new country in search of a better quality of life, migration has long been a means for people to chart a new course and expand what is possible for them and their families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&nbsp;when we talk about migration, Dr. Naomi Macalalad Bragin said,\u202fit&nbsp;is\u202fimportant to&nbsp;understand that&nbsp;we are also talking about grief.&nbsp;New opportunities&nbsp;often come with&nbsp;a cost \u2014 the culture, the\u202fpeople\u202fand the sense of place that we leave behind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Yes, mourning is a part of it, but there is also beauty in that mourning,\u201d said Bragin, an associate professor in\u202fthe University of Washington Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的re is joy. Grief can look like celebration \u2014 an altar we build or the way we dance or a song we sing together. It can look like a collective rhythm, where we stomp our feet and clap our hands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her latest project, Grief Rituals,\u202fBragin\u202fand fellow artist-collaborators will be rolling out a series of arts practice workshops and community ceremonies in and around Seattle\u2019s Chinatown&nbsp;International District throughout 2026. 足彩app哪个是正规的se events, she said, aim to create a space for people to hold feelings of loss, find places of connection and share their migration stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A migratory spirit<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bragin grew up in an affluent racially segregated suburb of Los Angeles. A queer mixed-race woman born to a Jewish father and a mother who immigrated from the Philippines, she often questioned where \u201chome\u201d was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a migratory spirit,\u201d she said. \u201cI love to travel and I find myself in spaces where English is not the primary language spoken..\u202fI would actually say that what I carry with me is my home.\u202fWherever I am, I learn how to make\u202fhome\u202fwith those who I am connecting with in that space. But home is also, in some ways, something I leave behind.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a dancer,&nbsp;Bragin&nbsp;added, movement is also her practice and the foundation for her art.\u202fIt&nbsp;is\u202fits own kind of migration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the work I\u2019ve done as an artist is about wondering and wandering,\u201d she said. \u201cI have this spirit in me that I call my unsettled wild spirit, who\u202fI\u2019ve\u202flearned to love. Sometimes being unsettled in that way can be very discombobulating because you\u202fdon\u2019t\u202ffeel super rooted,&nbsp;but\u202fI\u2019ve\u202flearned to embrace that feeling, utilize\u202fit as a superpower and channel it into my artistic expression.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of Bragin\u2019s work around migration is grounded in the creative partnerships\u202fshe&nbsp;has\u202fformed with other local artists. Right: Dr. Naomi Macalalad Bragin and Milvia Pacheco, a dancer and community organizer who works with Movimiento AfroLatino Seattle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A storytelling collection<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 Grief Rituals project is supported by funding from King County\u2019s 4Culture and\u202fcity of Seattle\u2019s Office of Arts &amp; Culture initiative,&nbsp;\u201cWe Still Dream a Future.\u201d Community collaborators include Nia-Amina Minor, co-founder of Black Collectivity, Derek Dizon, members of Black Collectivity Nia Amina Minor, Akoiya Harris and marco farroni, poet Jasmin\u00e9 Smith, and artistic consultant Ellen Sebastian Chang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To launch the project, Little Brown Language created a pop-up installation called the Migration Story Station, which traveled to different community events in Seattle last fall.&nbsp;Visitors&nbsp;to the&nbsp;pop-up station&nbsp;were invited to share their migration stories&nbsp;to&nbsp;inform the artists\u2019 creation of a dance-activation&nbsp;that will be&nbsp;offered to the community as a free public event in the spring. 足彩app哪个是正规的 artists asked visitors to respond to two questions to&nbsp;prompt their thinking around migration and grief:&nbsp;\u201cWhat do you carry with you?\u201d and \u201cWhat do you leave behind?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mariyah Hicks, a sophomore Media &amp; Communication Studies major at UW Bothell&nbsp;who is serving as a research assistant to the project, helps to collect and record these stories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCreatively, it\u2019s inspiring to watch people pour out their lives into one sheet of paper through words, symbols, shapes, mottos and more,\u201d Hicks said.&nbsp;\u201cI love the process of creating a path for people to properly heal from the past so that they can live in the future with peace of mind.\u202fAnd ultimately, once\u202ftheir stories are shared,\u202fthey\u2019re\u202fnot just disposed of but\u202fare\u202ftransformed into a new way of expression.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As her goal is to someday become a news anchor and to have her own talk show, Hicks said she found the opportunity to listen to different stories and perspectives especially valuable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project helps me to open my eyes and realize that everyone has their own stories.
