When his dad wanted to limit how much he played, he would remove various parts from\u00a0the\u00a0computer. Yu then had to figure out how to fix it. Over time, he learned a lot about hardware from putting his PC back together.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat hands-on experience really sparked my interest in technology,\u201d&nbsp;Yu&nbsp;said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That spark led him to pursue an undergraduate degree in computer science in Taiwan, where he grew up. While he enjoyed the program, what he found even more valuable was the coding club where he discovered his ultimate calling \u2014 building mobile apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really liked how writing apps can have a direct impact on users,\u201d he said, \u201cand that feels more fulfilling than working with hardware alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating,\u00a0Yu\u2019s\u00a0desire to learn more about the software side of tech brought him to the University of Washington Bothell. Now a graduate student in Computer Science &amp; Software Engineering, he\u00a0has worked on several apps,\u00a0from an interactive environmental education app to a learning tool for individuals with autism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Classes with&nbsp;working professionals<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yu said\u00a0much of his undergraduate courses were focused on math and theory, yet he was\u00a0drawn to UW Bothell\u2019s CSSE program for its emphasis on a more project-based curriculum. \u201cIt seemed like a great opportunity for me to participate in real-world scenarios and gain real experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking to dive straight into his passion for app development, he signed up for a mobile computing course in his first quarter. He was thrilled not only\u00a0to get\u00a0the hands-on training he\u2019d been wanting\u00a0but also to learn from someone who had industry experience \u2014 Hansel Ong, a part-time lecturer in\u00a0the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM,<\/a> whose work history includes tech giants such as Amazon and Microsoft.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t feel like he was just teaching a class,\u201d Yu said. \u201cHe takes students into his life and his work, and he sets us up to know what is happening in the industry and what is happening in real life instead of what is happening in a textbook.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yu added that,\u202fas he progressed through the\u00a0CSSE\u00a0program,\u202fhe was surprised to find that many of his instructors came from industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat they teach in class is on a whole other level. It\u2019s fascinating. It\u2019s like you\u2019re talking to a CEO, and he\u2019s teaching you how to prepare for your future,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd because the class sizes are so small,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0also\u00a0really accessible.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0great to be able to just walk up to professors after class and talk to them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>\u202f<\/strong>It\u202fdidn\u2019t\u202ffeel like he was just teaching a class. He takes students into his life and his work, and he sets us up to know what is happening in the industry and what is happening in real life instead of what is happening in a textbook.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Kris Yu, graduate student, Computer Science &amp; Software Engineering&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An app for climate awareness<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yu had created a few apps on his own\u00a0before coming to UW Bothell. He even submitted two of them to the Swift 足彩app哪个是正规的 Challenge,\u00a0an annual competition sponsored by Apple where student developers from around the world submit creative app prototypes. 足彩app哪个是正规的 first year he created a cybersecurity-themed mini-game. His second year, in anticipation of applying to graduate programs in the U.S., he developed a language learning app to help him master English.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his first year at UW Bothell, he created his third submission \u2014 Forest Guardian, an interactive educational app that teaches environmental conservation through storytelling \u2014 and this time, he was selected as one of just 350 winners\u00a0from all around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 inspiration behind Forest Guardian came from his own volunteer experience cleaning river waste in Taiwan during his undergraduate studies.\u00a0Although he was aware of climate issues before, he said,\u00a0it was seeing the impacts firsthand that really drove him to act.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was collecting trash by a river and saw a bunch of abandoned bicycles and plastic waste. It really hit me how much human behavior\u202fimpacts\u202fnature,\u201d\u00a0Yu\u00a0said. \u201cI was shocked. I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0aware of how serious the situation had become, and I thought that\u202fmaybe a\u202fstorytelling app could help raise awareness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the app, players take on the role of a forest guardian as they navigate through stories and face real environmental challenges, such as wildfires,\u202fpollution\u202fand ecological changes. Each choice they make affects the forest\u2019s health points. Whether the user helps the forest to recover and thrive or\u00a0to\u00a0decline is seen in the environmental score they receive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to create something where people could experience those consequences in an engaged way and not just a lecture,\u201d Yu said.\u00a0\u201cThis app shows how human decisions can make a difference \u2014 for better or worse.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A learning tool for individuals with autism<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Yu plans&nbsp;again&nbsp;to enter the Swift 足彩app哪个是正规的 Challenge. His submission will be a simplified version of his capstone project, \u201cSocial Stories,\u201d a learning tool for individuals with autism.&nbsp;Social stories are visual and audio narratives that help prepare neurodivergent individuals for various life events and for changes in their daily routines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 app is part of an ongoing research project led by his mentor, Dr. Annuska Zolyomi, assistant professor in UW Bothell\u2019s\u00a0School of STEM.
