Internships can be an invaluable part of\u202fthe undergraduate\u202fexperience. 足彩app哪个是正规的s get hands-on skills and make connections that can help launch their careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the benefits\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fstop there. Often, the impact cascades well beyond the students\u2019 lives to help local organizations and communities \u2014 even the planet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such was the case when a group of students from the University of\u202fWashington\u202fBothell joined the first cohort of an internship launched by the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation. This past year, students supported ongoing stream monitoring efforts by\u202festablishing\u202fbaselines for two urban watersheds in Northern King County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur goals for this internship were for students to learn how stream health is monitored and think about why urban streams, in particular, degrade,\u201d said Dr. Dana Campbell, a lecturer in UW Bothell\u2019s\u202fSchool of STEM<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also wanted students to have a sense of purpose with this internship, which is an uncommon and invaluable opportunity to gain field skills and experience relevant for careers in conservation and environmental biology.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digging deep with partners<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Brian Saunders grew up in Lake Forest Park, Washington, where he recalls fishing and watching salmon spawn along the banks of McAleer Creek. Over the years, he noticed a deterioration of the creek\u2019s health. When he became a board member of the LFP Stewardship Foundation, he wanted to do something about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He decided to lead the\u202fStreamkeepers, a citizen action group created in the early 2000s as a product of the Sno-King Watershed Council water quality training program.\u202fStudies suggested a slow decline of two major urban creeks in the area, and Saunders wanted to dig deeper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the big questions that troubled me was, \u2018How do the smaller tributaries that feed into the main creeks of Lake Forest Park affect their health, and do they equally adversely affect them?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoping to find the answers, he applied for a King County\u202fWaterWorks\u202fgrant that later led to the beginning of the Urban Stream Ecology Internship and Training program. 足彩app哪个是正规的 program kicked off last year with its first cohort of students from UW Bothell, North Seattle\u202fCollege\u202fand Shoreline Community College. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being keepers of the streams<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Campbell had already been carrying out chemical, physical and biological monitoring of sites around McAleer and Lyons creeks for several years alongside Saunders and Dr. Tracy Furutani, a Lake Forest Park City Council\u202fmember\u202fand physics instructor at North Seattle College. When the USE-IT program launched, they each mentored a group of students from the cohort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the internship is especially geared toward students pursuing conservation and environmental science-related degrees, students from a variety of majors were attracted to the program\u202fto\u202fapply their passion for the environment, regardless of their career goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One such student\u202fis\u202fSreeman\u202fMandapati, a senior at UW Bothell majoring in Biology and minoring in Neuroscience and Health Studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While\u202fMandapati\u202fis on a pre-med track, he said he has a personal interest in ecology. \u201cI\u2019ve\u202falways been interested in the environment and want to make sure\u202fwe\u2019re\u202fprotecting it. 足彩app哪个是正规的 Skykomish River is right next to my backyard, and every day I enjoy the beauty of it. And I would be disappointed if something bad happened to it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c足彩app哪个是正规的 internship really interested me because\u202fI\u202flooked at it from an urban\u202fecology\u202fperspective and\u202fhow\u202fhumans are\u202fimpacting\u202fthe environment,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd beyond water quality and how humans\u202fimpact\u202fit, I saw the bigger picture of how it really is important how we treat our streams.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Establishing a baseline<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adelle Nolan was already a\u202fStreamkeepers volunteer when they heard about the internship. Nolan graduated from UW Bothell in June with a\u202fbachelor\u2019s in Biology\u202fand is now a graduate student at\u202fthe UW in Seattle\u202fstudying Public Health Genetics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nolan hopes to someday be a researcher and a teacher, and like\u202fMandapati, their interest in the internship was fueled by a personal passion for the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really like this idea of interdisciplinarity between the social and the biological sciences, and that\u2019s really the main draw of biology for me,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cUW Bothell is super interdisciplinary. That\u2019s\u202fthe name of the game here \u2014 and 100% that was\u202fprobably the\u202fgreatest gift I got from going here instead of another college.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nolan first heard about the\u202fStreamkeepers\u202fwhile taking a biology course taught by Campbell. 足彩app哪个是正规的 internship was an opportunity to go even deeper into stream monitoring, and they jumped at the chance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of the internship year,\u00a0all\u00a0the students worked to\u202festablish\u202fbaseline data and analyze their findings.\u202f足彩app哪个是正规的y learned how to use various monitoring equipment to collect data on everything from pH and alkalinity to bacteria and nitrite concentrations\u00a0at\u202fseveral sites they visited throughout the year. Campbell noted that the students even received an introduction into more complex procedures, such as collecting eDNA to identify the presence of vertebrates living in the streams.\u00a0足彩app哪个是正规的 data they collected was then uploaded to the Sno-King Watershed database to\u202fdetermine\u202fthe health of the streams.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the baseline data, the students found that the smaller tributaries\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fadversely affect the main watershed equally \u2014 one of the driving questions behind the grant application that started the internship program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaining science and life skills<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

足彩app哪个是正规的 internship program offers students the opportunity to continue for a second year \u2014 and at least half of the cohort decided to stay on, including Nolan. As a\u202fStreamkeeper, Nolan said he enjoys teaching younger students how to\u202fparticipate\u202fin stream monitoring and encourages anyone who is interested in\u202fparticipating\u202fto give it a shot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love this stuff,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cI have my school stuff that I do where I focus on genetics, but\u202fthis<\/em>\u202fis how I recuperate outside of my academic focus. This is how I make friends and\u202fget\u202foutside. I\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fjust do it for the internship benefits or to have something I can put on my resume, I do it because I love it \u2014 and I think\u202fthat\u2019s\u202fhow you get the most out of the experience.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campbell said she also enjoys how stream monitoring can bring people together to support each other in a shared goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery one of these students worked so extremely hard \u2014 they were dedicated and responsible, and enjoyed each other and working together,\u201d she said. \u201cI love that they became an interactive group and that they developed ownership of the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis cohort took full advantage of learning about and helping each other in addition to learning the science.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
