What makes a crowdfunding campaign successful? And how is it that something that can give us these warm, charitable feelings can at the same time make us feel profoundly uncomfortable about why it\u2019s happening?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的se questions proved to be the foundation for more than a decade of research into the topic. In her recently published book, \u201cCrowded Out: 足彩app哪个是正规的 True Costs of Crowdfunding Healthcare,\u201d Kenworthy shares some of the answers she\u2019s discovered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collaborative beginnings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenworthy\u2019s foray into crowdfunding research began as a collaborative project with fellow UW Bothell faculty member Dr. Lauren Berliner, associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>. Her work then continued over the years through numerous projects with both student and faculty researchers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/05\/Crowded-Out.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30849\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/05\/Crowded-Out.jpg 432w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/05\/Crowded-Out-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them is Dr. Jin-Kyu Jung, IAS professor, who joined the effort as a mapping and GIS (geographic information systems) expert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel quite fortunate to be part of an interdisciplinary collaboration with Nora and her students, Jung said. \u201cSeveral years of intensive qualitative, quantitative and geospatial efforts helped me better understand the experience of people using GoFundMe and how critical and creative health and mapping projects of publicly oriented scholarship are (re)making knowledge about the hidden geographies of a new digital media landscape.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jung\u2019s work focused on GIS-based analysis of how socio-economic, health and racial inequities shape the prevalence, proliferation and outcomes of crowdfunding campaigns. One of the outcomes of his work was an interactive website, <a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/a866a9088fb94dbda2dc79d0b9ff13e0\/page\/Welcome\/#data_s=id%3AdataSource_22-184540eaa42-layer-4%3A362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GoFundUs<\/a>, that features mapping visualizations of crowdfunding campaign data, stories about crowdfunding experiences and other data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sharing answers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although she didn\u2019t set out to create a larger body of work, Kenworthy realized in speaking with family, friends and neighbors who had crowdfunding experiences to share that others were wrestling with some of the same questions she had.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really wrote the book to try and give people a conceptual vocabulary for how to understand why this thing is happening, why it\u2019s so popular and what it reflects about our broader systems of health care, charity and social support that we have in the U.S. \u2014 or don\u2019t have,\u201d she said. \u201cThis has become an informal infrastructure of crisis response and medical care in the U.S., and how is it changing the way that we think about who gets help and on what terms?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the themes she explores in her book is that of selective deservingness, or the idea that not everyone deserves help equally. With crowdfunding, everyday people are given the opportunity to decide who is most deserving of their support, and, too often, biases affect the outcomes. He started a crowdfunding campaign but never shared it with anyone he knew.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe started looking around at all these other campaigns with really tragic stories, and he just felt like his story was not tragic enough to justify the shame he felt asking family and friends for help,\u201d Kenworthy said. \u201cHe put his campaign up there and just hoped someone would come along and find it and help him out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trevor\u2019s campaign raised zero dollars in more than a year. His story, she said, is not an uncommon one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In harsh juxtaposition to Trevor\u2019s situation, Kenworthy also came across the story of a local media celebrity whose coworkers launched a campaign for him after he got hit by a car. With their existing media connections and social media following, the campaign was a success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowdfunding often requires skills that not everyone possesses, Kenworthy noted. But, it\u2019s resource intensive, and it\u2019s often much more expensive and emergent,\u201d Kenworthy said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the best public health work happens way upstream before people become severely ill.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devoting more resources to upstream solutions, she added, could be far more effective.
