{"id":30288,"date":"2024-01-26T12:17:19","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T20:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=30288"},"modified":"2025-01-08T12:18:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-08T20:18:38","slug":"diversifying-the-stem-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/26\/diversifying-the-stem-field","title":{"rendered":"Diversifying the STEM field\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, people of color have entered higher education and professions, settings previously occupied almost exclusively by white people.\u202fMany schools and workplaces and universities, however, continue to lack diversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGrowing up, for example, I absolutely loved science, specifically chemistry,\u201d said Alex Margarito, a 2019 alumnus of UW Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM<\/a>. \u201cBut I never considered it as a career because I had believed that STEM fields were reserved only for white people \u2014 and that was largely because I only ever had white professors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you don\u2019t see people who look like you in certain spaces, you tend to think it\u2019s because people like you don\u2019t belong there,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That perception began to change after he entered higher education, first at Cascadia College and then UW Bothell, two institutions on a shared campus that is known for its diversity. At UW Bothell, for example, approximately 60% of students identify as people of color.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both as a college graduate and as a high school teacher now, Margarito knows from firsthand experience that receiving an education in a diverse\u202fenvironment can make a profound impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Opening parameters of possibility<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, 77% of elementary and secondary science and engineering educators are white. \u201cBecause I had never seen a teacher of color, I assumed that people like me didn\u2019t go on to become teachers, that just wasn\u2019t the work we did,\u201d said Margarito. \u201cIt never crossed my mind as a possibility.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of pursuing a career in chemistry, after graduating from high school Margarito started working at Target. \u201cI wasn\u2019t in the best place. I was hanging with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble,\u201d he said. \u201cI really had no outlook on my life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的re he met the woman who would become his wife \u2014 the person who pushed him to go back to college and \u201ccompletely changed my life and made me who I am today,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, three years after graduating from high school, Margarito started his journey in higher education at Cascadia College. At that point, however, he still was not planning on a career in STEM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t until a few quarters passed that I started considering it,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause then I had been taught by multiple professors who looked like me. Jaffe was so impressed with Margarito\u2019s performance that he offered him a job as a research assistant. \u201cAlex was a strong student and energetic in our research lab. He did some very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2019\/07\/24\/seattle-smoke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interesting research with the city\u202fof Seattle on indoor air pollution<\/a>,\u201d Jaffe said. \u201cAnd everyone on my team found him to be a fun student to work with.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 pollution research was in response to wildfires in summer 2019. \u201cI monitored air quality and analyzed the data as part of a city pilot project to offer residents a fresh air oasis at some community centers,\u201d Margarito said. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的 two years prior \u2014 2017 and 2018 \u2014 had been the worst years on record in the West. And with that accomplishment, he said, he can both work in chemistry \u2014 and make a difference for the next generation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI now teach chemistry at Juanita High School,\u201d he said. \u201cI am that teacher of color I never had, breaking down barriers and showing students like me that they do belong and can succeed in STEM careers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he does so, in part, by being open and honest with his students. \u201cI don\u2019t sugarcoat or hide anything from them,\u201d he said. \u201cI tell them that it will be hard, because it will be, but I also tell them they can achieve anything they set their mind to as long as they have the right resources, grit and perseverance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having been a teacher for three years now, Margarito has witnessed firsthand the impact he is making.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have this one student whose family really struggles financially. 足彩app哪个是正规的 student told me that his parents tell him not to go to college and to just work because they need the money,\u201d he said. \u201cOne day he told me straight up, \u2018Mr. Margarito, you are the reason why I don\u2019t want to do that. If you can do it, I can do it, too. You showed me that it\u2019s possible.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo hear that directly from a student is powerful,\u201d Margarito said. \u201cI don\u2019t have to wonder whether I am making a difference. Even his first name, Alex, is an Americanized version of his father\u2019s name, Alejandro.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll my life, my dad had been telling me to assimilate, to sound white and act white, so that I didn\u2019t have to struggle the way that he did,\u201d Margarito said. \u201cThat\u2019s part of the reason why I pushed myself so hard to learn the language and to not have an accent.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his classroom, however, Margarito said he enjoys meeting students where they are and speaking conversationally with them \u2014 whether that means using slang and less formal ways of speaking that students from low-income areas might be more comfortable with or switching to speaking in Spanish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/01\/Margarito-Alex-Elliott-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Two people look at a piece of paper.\" class=\"wp-image-30297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/01\/Margarito-Alex-Elliott-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/01\/Margarito-Alex-Elliott-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/01\/Margarito-Alex-Elliott-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/01\/Margarito-Alex-Elliott-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/01\/Margarito-Alex-Elliott.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alex Margarito with student Elliott Jones.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Serving as a role model<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow that I\u2019m in a place where I\u2019m in a position of authority and I\u2019m a role model for these students,\u201d Margarito said, \u201cI really wanted to make it apparent that you can speak the way you want to speak and there\u2019s nothing wrong with that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the diverse Lake Washington School District, Juanita High School has a population of students who speak 59 different primary languages in their homes. At least eight languages are spoken among Margarito\u2019s students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure his students are not left behind in any way because of language, Margarito provides assignments and other documents in multilingual formats whenever possible.
