{"id":29803,"date":"2023-10-05T18:42:37","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T01:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=29803"},"modified":"2024-01-05T11:46:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T19:46:24","slug":"journey-to-self-growth-through-teaching-kids-to-code","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/05\/journey-to-self-growth-through-teaching-kids-to-code","title":{"rendered":"Journey to self-growth through teaching kids to code\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Preparing for a summer-long project with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/connected-learning\/husky-catalyst-initiatives\/digital-scholars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Scholars Program<\/a>, Parisa Soltanian hoped she would find a project that closely tied in with her newfound passion for computer science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the third-year pre-major at the University of Washington Bothell did not expect was that the opportunity would also involve doing something she was not <em>yet<\/em> passionate about: teaching children to code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an only child, and I don\u2019t have children in my life,\u201d Soltanian said. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的 thought of teaching them was scary and overwhelming. But it turns out, they\u2019re really fun, and I kind of love them now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in spring 2021, the Digital Scholars Program provides first-generation students with training in digital marketing, data analytics, social media, data visualization and other skills over three academic quarters. During the summer quarter, students work with a community partner on a project to apply their skills in the real world, just as they would in an internship or job.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Discovering a passion<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 daughter of a medical assistant and an aerospace engineer, Soltanian always knew she\u2019d go to college one day. She grew up in Kenmore, Washington, and began studying at Cascadia College as a Running Start student while still at Inglemoor High School. With her love of math, she thought mechanical engineering would be the perfect fit for her, but quickly discovered that wasn\u2019t the case when taking a physics class.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So she decided to give computer science a try when she transferred to UW Bothell in autumn 2022. And in an introductory computer science course, she knew she\u2019d found her passion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing majors wasn\u2019t easy, however, and the idea of having to take more classes in a field where she didn\u2019t have any experience or connections felt daunting, Soltanian said. That\u2019s when her adviser recommended she apply for the Digital Scholars Program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I love being a part of this program. It\u2019s exactly for people like me who maybe don\u2019t know what direction they\u2019re going in or how to get to where they want to be. I listened and reassured her that she would get training from the Coding with Kids team,\u201d said Kara Adams, director of connected learning. \u201cAs the quarter went on, she expressed more confidence in her ability to work with kids, and she would share about the moments she really enjoyed teaching them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soltanian taught camps both in person and online, with students ranging from 5 to 12 years old. Although her first week of teaching felt overwhelming,\u202fshe said she also quickly came to appreciate the experience of watching children learn a simplified version of a complex digital skill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the kids, a 5-year-old boy, had fully completed six coding languages already. I haven\u2019t even done that much,\u201d she said. \u201cI was really impressed by how smart they are and how fast they learn.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of her preparation to teach, the academy provided her with a curriculum that used video games as a fun hands-on way for students to dip their toes into basic coding concepts. Children who lack basic troubleshooting skills can struggle with what to do when a webpage isn\u2019t loading, she said, and teaching them often requires pausing from the core coding lesson to show them how to do other simple tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to be calm and peaceful with them, and I really feel like that\u2019s been reflected in my personal life,\u201d she said, adding that her newfound skill of patience has become an asset when she goes to her job at a restaurant, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I did meditation every day for the last year, I feel like I would be where I am now \u2014 but instead I\u2019ve just been working with children every day for a whole summer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Applying new skills<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From patience to communication techniques to time management, Soltanian said she gained many useful skills and insights over the summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think what Parisa gained from participating in the project is how to translate her coding skills into different levels of pedagogical strategies as she teaches kids how to code,\u201d said Dr. Hsinmei Lin, co-director of the Digital Scholars Program and a lecturer in UW Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunication skills are essential to teaching and supporting students, and in Parisa\u2019s case, I believe she has gained the skills of networking, professionalization in an educational setting and digital strategic communications.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soltanian said her work at Coding with Kids even helped her gain a deeper understanding of the topics she was teaching the children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been solidifying the concepts and logic behind coding. When kids ask me questions, I have to give them reasons as to why something won\u2019t work, or why it works the way it does, and explain it to them in a basic way,\u201d Soltanian said. \u201cIt\u2019s helped me grasp a better idea of what coding is and what it can do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A future in computer science<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While she is still uncertain exactly what she wants to do after graduation in 2026, Soltanian has become keenly interested in how computer science can be used to help people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s particularly inspired by work being done by Microsoft and Harborview Medical Center to develop games and controls for people with paraplegia. \u201cI think that\u2019s super cool that they can use this technology to help people who are in need or who don\u2019t have the same opportunities as others,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d like to do something like that at some point, because, of course, you want to do something that\u2019s meaningful and that helps the world somehow.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soltanian said she plans to continue teaching through Coding with Kids during the 2023-24 school year.
