{"id":2672,"date":"2016-06-09T14:05:59","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T14:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=2672"},"modified":"2023-06-08T19:53:13","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T19:53:13","slug":"nursing-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2016\/06\/09\/nursing-fellow","title":{"rendered":"Butch de Castro, Academy of Nursing fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/nursing-fellow.jpg\" alt=\"nursing fellow\" class=\"wp-image-28338\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>\n\tButch de Castro, associate professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies, has been selected as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tIt&rsquo;s a prestigious distinction that reflects the excellence of faculty scholars at University of Washington Bothell.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tDe Castro says he&rsquo;s honored to be recognized for his work in promoting nursing, and he hopes to use his selection to continue advancing policies that address health disparities &ndash; the disproportionate burden of disease and illness among disadvantaged communities.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\t&ldquo;I&rsquo;m so thankful to all of my mentors and colleagues over the years who have provided the support and opportunities to achieve the things that qualified me for selection,&rdquo; de Castro said.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tDe Castro has been with the UW Bothell School of Nursing and Health Studies since 2013. He also is an adjunct faculty member with the University of Washington School of Nursing and School of Public Health, serving as director of the Occupational Health Nursing Program.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tBefore becoming an academic, he worked for the U.S. Department of Labor&rsquo;s Occupational Safety and Health Administration as well as the American Nurses Association.<br \/>\n\tDe Castro&rsquo;s research focuses on the effects of work-related stress and unfair employment conditions among immigrant and minority workers.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tIn addition to identifying top scholars in the field, the American Academy of Nursing advances health policies and practices. Academy members contribute to policy initiatives that help reform America&#039;s health system.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tNew fellows must be nominated by existing fellows and approved by a selection committee. In 2015 only 57 percent of applicants were selected as fellows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tButch de Castro, associate professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies, has been selected as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
