{"id":2627,"date":"2016-05-17T16:39:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T16:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=2627"},"modified":"2023-06-08T19:53:18","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T19:53:18","slug":"pentagon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2016\/05\/17\/pentagon","title":{"rendered":"Artist gets down to UW Bothell business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n      <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/pentagon.jpg\" alt=\"pentagon\" class=\"wp-image-28709\"><\/figure>\n\n          <p>\n\tWhen artist Stephen Watson arrived at University of Washington Bothell to prepare an installation based on a layout of pentagons, he thought he&rsquo;d have to cut the shapes out of Plexiglas by hand with a jigsaw.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/stephen-watson.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28710\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\tHe was pleased when mathematician Casey Mann showed him the laser cutter at Makerspace. With the laser cutting 200 or 300 hand-size pentagons from the sheets of plastic glass, Watson said he&rsquo;ll expand the work of art he&rsquo;s installing at the fourth floor vista of Discovery Hall &#8212; &ldquo;more ambitious, more precise, more collaborative.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tArranged in a 6-foot mosaic or mandala, individual tiles are covered with various herbs and spices to create a unique visual and aromatic experience.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWatson is an assistant professor of art at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, known for creating such temporary, sensory works of art.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe&rsquo;ll decide in the moment how to spread around the curry, paprika, chilies, rosemary, sage, oregano, cinnamon, onion powder and maybe turmeric. He wasn&rsquo;t sure about turmeric Tuesday as he broke out the pentagons from the lasered sheets of plastic glass.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWatson speaks of his art as a living thing that evolves as it is created to fit the space.
