But it was important to stay connected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some research, he came up with the idea of a podcast, which he launched with his co-SJOs Gurleen Mann and Kelly Pham. Unlike a video conference that generally happens live, requires participation and keeps users tied to their screen, a podcast can be listened to anytime, anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"370\" height=\"264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Kelly-Pham-Jorge-Azpeitia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25443\" style=\"width:1030px;height:687px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Kelly-Pham-Jorge-Azpeitia.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Kelly-Pham-Jorge-Azpeitia-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kelly Pham (l) and Jorge Azpeitia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot only is a podcast more accessible, it\u2019s also more enjoyable,\u201d said <a href=\"\/news\/july-2021\/four-years-lifetime-lessons\">Azpeitia<\/a>, a 2021 graduate with degrees in Media &amp; Communication Studies and in Culture, Literature &amp; the Arts. \u201cIt gives people an opportunity to get outside and away from their desks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin E. Lopez, the SJO adviser, said that \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/uwbsjo\">Real Talk series<\/a> made space for people at UW Bothell to find community despite being in isolation \u2014 and provided opportunities for us all to learn from, care for and stand with one another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Somber similarities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 students wanted to use the podcast platform to discuss relevant topics that pertained to social justice and advocacy. Using that as a guide, Mann, a third-year student majoring in Law, Economics &amp; Public Policy, decided to focus her episode on hip-hop and resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/IMG-1062.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25444\" style=\"width:1030px;height:687px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/IMG-1062.jpg 621w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/IMG-1062-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/IMG-1062-600x744.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A flier for Gurleen Mann&#8217;s segment on hip-hop and resistance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHip-hop was originally created for and by urban youth as a tool of expression in the 1970s,\u201d Mann said. \u201cIt was a result of the frustration African Americans and Latinos felt when, despite the advancement in civil rights, their economic conditions still didn\u2019t improve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about the genre\u2019s history, she interviewed Dr. Georgia Roberts, a lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences who studies and teaches courses on hip-hop history and culture. Roberts has a course focused specifically on the work of rapper Tupac Shakur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy incorporating the legacy of the Black Panther Party and his connection to Black power, Tupac\u2019s music preserves a moment in time,\u201d Roberts said. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的 lyrics are a marker that can be used to measure how far we have come, or conversely, how far we still need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A powerful example discussed in Mann\u2019s podcast was Tupac\u2019s song, \u201cChanges\u201d and its relevance to modern day. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的 song talks about mass incarceration before there was a word for it. 足彩app哪个是正规的 lyrics are about racism and misplaced hatred,\u201d Mann said. \u201cSadly, it\u2019s now two decades later and his words still hold true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healing in community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pham, a third-year student majoring in Community Psychology, also used her podcast to address racism by talking about the rise of xenophobia and Asian hate during the pandemic. She collaborated with UW Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vsauwb\/\">Vietnamese 足彩app哪个是正规的 Association<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fasauwb.org\/\">Filipino American 足彩app哪个是正规的 Association<\/a> to create the episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 pandemic heightened xenophobic behaviors that targeted Asian people specifically, she said. \u201cWe started seeing reports on the news of our elders being attacked, and people shouting slurs at them while they were just walking down the street,\u201d she said. \u201cAs an Asian woman, I wanted to use the podcast to honor my community\u2019s experience and remind them they are not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see my parents in those stories,\u201d Pham said. \u201cIt\u2019s scary knowing my loved ones are at risk because they are Asian. 足彩app哪个是正规的y could get hurt just going to work. Doing this podcast is just one small way to try to bring people together and make that first step toward recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legacy lives on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Naomi Yohannes and Lauren Allen, Social Justice Organizers in 2020-21, followed in their predecessors\u2019 footsteps and continued the podcast with a three-part series on cancel culture: \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的 Tea on Cancel Culture,\u201d \u201cHow to Get Away with Being a White Man\u201d and \u201cMyselfie got Cancelled?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yohannes, a spring 2021 graduate with degrees in Community Psychology and in Society, Ethics &amp; Human Behavior, said they wanted to take a closer look at cancel culture because of how prevalent it has become. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a buzz phrase. Even politicians have openly expressed their fear of getting \u2018canceled,\u2019\u201d Yohannes said. \u201cWhat began on social media has now gone beyond our feed and the digital world to impact people in real life, often people who are in positions of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to think about whether or not social media has enabled a universal surveillance on speech, and if the consequences of that surveillance \u2014 getting canceled \u2014 is just.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yohannes says that cancel culture mirrors a carceral system in that it is designed to punish individuals. \u201cPeople can lose jobs, their community and even close-knit relationships. For this reason, neither she nor Yohannes see cancel culture as always being damaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe see it as a way of healing, too,\u201d Allen said. \u201cIt can be about telling someone that they can do, and be, better. It\u2019s about accountability, learning and growing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yohannes said in the end, that\u2019s what she thinks it\u2019s all about. \u201cAll we can do is learn from our mistakes and do better next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel so lucky to be a part of a university where I feel safe enough to speak out and supported in my experience.
