{"id":18014,"date":"2020-08-04T15:47:15","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T15:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=18014"},"modified":"2023-06-08T18:26:28","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T18:26:28","slug":"fostering-science-and-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/04\/fostering-science-and-art","title":{"rendered":"Professional development integrating art, STEM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/STEAM-long.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/STEAM-long.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/STEAM-long-300x50.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/STEAM-long-768x129.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/STEAM-long-600x101.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Education researchers at the University of Washington Bothell are&nbsp;helping lead&nbsp;a&nbsp;project&nbsp;that fosters teaching&nbsp;K-12 students&nbsp;to integrate science and art.&nbsp;By&nbsp;making&nbsp;this&nbsp;connection,&nbsp;researchers&nbsp;aim to broaden student&nbsp;participation&nbsp;in&nbsp;science, technology, engineering and math.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not as easy as&nbsp;adding A to STEM to make STEAM, said Blakely&nbsp;Tsurusaki,&nbsp;a senior research scientist at&nbsp;the&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;Institute for Educational Renewal&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/education\">School of Educational Studies<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor us,&nbsp;STEAM is really trying to think deeply about how the fields are integrated,\u201d&nbsp;she&nbsp;said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsurusaki&nbsp;is a co-principal investigator,&nbsp;along with&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;Director Carrie Tzou,&nbsp;on the five-year project&nbsp;called&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fosteringsteam.org\/\">Fostering STEAM<\/a>.&nbsp;It began&nbsp;in 2017,&nbsp;funded with a&nbsp;National Science Foundation grant that totals&nbsp;more than $1.2 million.&nbsp;UW Bothell is one of several partners on the project, including the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory at Tucson, Arizona.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Workshops for informal educators&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"597\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Blakely-Tsurusaki.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Blakely-Tsurusaki.jpg 597w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Blakely-Tsurusaki-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Blakely Tsurusaki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fostering STEAM provides professional development workshops to \u201cinformal science learning\u201d educators \u2014 people who work in libraries, science centers and after-school programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date,&nbsp;workshops&nbsp;have been offered in Seattle, Tucson, Fairbanks and Sitka, Alaska. 足彩app哪个是正规的&nbsp;National Art Education Foundation&nbsp;is also a partner in workshops for art&nbsp;educators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 outreach to these groups is part of the researchers\u2019&nbsp;recognition&nbsp;that&nbsp;\u201cimportant learning&nbsp;occurs outside of school time,\u201d&nbsp;Tsurusaki&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>足彩app哪个是正规的 workshops&nbsp;model&nbsp;STEAM activities&nbsp;that students might follow, such as&nbsp;creating&nbsp;digital&nbsp;animation, which requires art and computer skills.&nbsp;But the ideas are more important than the&nbsp;particular activity,&nbsp;Tsurusaki&nbsp;said.&nbsp;足彩app哪个是正规的&nbsp;activities&nbsp;all&nbsp;emphasize core STEAM practices:&nbsp;engage in close observation,&nbsp;focus on personal meaning,&nbsp;conduct open exploration,&nbsp;design with intention,&nbsp;iterate,&nbsp;and communicate about process and outcome.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot&nbsp;of participants&nbsp;end up modifying activities we do with them. 足彩app哪个是正规的&nbsp;activities&nbsp;are an example of what STEAM can be, so they have an understanding and can develop the programming they want,\u201d&nbsp;Tsurusaki&nbsp;said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workshops also include discussions of identity, she said, noting that how students identify&nbsp;themselves&nbsp;(I\u2019m not good at math!)&nbsp;affects their engagement and interest. One of the goals is&nbsp;for&nbsp;students&nbsp;to&nbsp;see themselves as being capable of math and science. A related concept in the workshops addresses mindset or whether&nbsp;students&nbsp;think their skills are&nbsp;\u201cset\u201d&nbsp;or can change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople think they\u2019re either good or bad at something,\u201d&nbsp;Tsurusaki&nbsp;said. \u201cGrowth mindset says you\u2019re&nbsp;not good or bad, you just need support and experience to learn skills.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the pandemic has forced the researchers to reschedule workshops, they still have&nbsp;more&nbsp;work to do building the portal of resources and analyzing three years of data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relevant, connected learning&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fostering STEAM&nbsp;builds&nbsp;on&nbsp;a previous&nbsp;Goodlad&nbsp;grant that explored how to interest girls in science through art.&nbsp;Tsurusaki&nbsp;wants&nbsp;all&nbsp;students to understand&nbsp;how the things they&nbsp;are learning&nbsp;are connected and relevant to their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of times,&nbsp;people think of what they\u2019re learning in school as disconnected from their lives, especially in STEM fields,\u201d she said. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的y don\u2019t know why they need to learn whatever they\u2019re learning in school because they think, \u2018I\u2019m not going to become a mathematician or a computer scientist.\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the purpose of education is for us to educate ourselves about ways of thinking and&nbsp;to&nbsp;understand how we are connected to science, technology, art, engineering and math.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change&nbsp;is a&nbsp;prime example of the&nbsp;relevance&nbsp;of a more holistic, integrated view of the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need people to understand how we are part of our natural world and how the human-built and natural world interact,\u201d&nbsp;Tsurusaki&nbsp;said. \u201cWe need to understand science, engineering,&nbsp;math, technology and art to be able to solve these big issues that are coming up in our&nbsp;world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Education researchers at the University of Washington Bothell are helping lead a project that fosters teaching K12 students to integrate science and art.
