{"id":9693,"date":"2014-04-03T11:22:28","date_gmt":"2014-04-03T11:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=9693"},"modified":"2024-12-03T11:48:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-03T19:48:02","slug":"public-art-social-change-040314","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2014-2\/public-art-social-change-040314","title":{"rendered":"Public Art for Social Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n    Published: April 3, 2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tThis winter, students in Carrie Bodle\u2019s Art and Public Space and Gary Carpenter\u2019s Public Art and Social Change had the opportunity to leave their mark on the UW Bothell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe collaborated with 4Culture and artist Kristen Ramirez to explore the possibilities for initiatives for two tunnels\/underpasses on the Burke-Gilman bike trail in Kenmore,\u201d Bodle explains. \u201cThis was a wonderful experience for the students to actively participate in current public art projects and to build knowledge pathways between UW Bothell and the surrounding communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tThroughout Bodle\u2019s course students visited multiple public art sites and were encouraged to consider art and public perception. 足彩app哪个是正规的s were also tasked with developing a proposal that included a visual model, materials, and costs required to complete the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t 足彩app哪个是正规的 students who participated had a variety of arts experience, including Venus Solis, who had spent several years in art school and wanted to expand her understanding of public art. \u201cI learned the extensive process artists will go through to get their work out there to the world,\u201d says Solis. \u201cIt takes a lot of patience, flexibility and creativity to get your piece to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tCarpenter\u2019s course asked students to create a public art proposal that would demonstrate a connection between social equality and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis was a challenging project that required research into a wide range of disciplines and development of student\u2019s creative capabilities,\u201d says Carpenter. \u201c足彩app哪个是正规的y met that challenge by developing strong conceptual works with social impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tJodene Hager\u2019s proposal entitled \u201cEquals\u201d, focuses on the structural injustices against minority populations and the parallels between these injustices and environmental degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis was my first art class ever, so I was overdue for one. I enjoy doing some hobby painting on the side, but I never took a class to learn it from a professional. 足彩app哪个是正规的 topic for the art class was right up my alley with environmental health and social change as the focus,\u201d Hager explains. \u201cThis class can be singularly responsible for giving me the confidence to be the artist I did not realize I was!
