{"id":24183,"date":"2024-01-16T19:38:24","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/?page_id=24183"},"modified":"2024-01-16T19:38:25","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:38:25","slug":"pre-completion-opt-requirements-and-faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\/pre-completion-opt\/pre-completion-opt-requirements-and-faq","title":{"rendered":"Pre-completion OPT Requirements and FAQ"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reporting Employment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You must report your employment information to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\/\">international student portal<\/a> via the OPT &amp; STEM OPT Employer Update request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not need to provide an employment offer letter but we do recommend you retain one for your own benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relation to program of study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your employment must be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/career-services\/majors-and-careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">related to your major\/degree.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When reporting employment to ISS, write 2 &#8211; 3 sentences and be clear about why this employment is suitable for Pre-completion OPT. Remember that the employment is considered training for your program of study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISS will email you if we do not see a direct connection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hours worked<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When reporting employment, you will be asked if you have a full-time job or part-time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on your authorization, you may be limited to part-time employment (20 hours\/week).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of employment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regular paid employment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteer or unpaid opportunities: You need to be able to provide evidence about how it is related to your major and have evidence of the number of hours you volunteered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment by multiple short-term employers: Keep a list of all short-term employment, dates, and durations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work for hire: Employment where an individual performs a service based on a contractual relationship rather than an employment relationship. Have evidence showing the duration of the contract periods and the name and address of the contracting company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-employed business owner: You can start a business and be self-employed.
