Washington state residents are taking climate matters into their own hands as 90 members of the public join the country&#039;s <a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waclimateassembly.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">first climate assembly<\/a> to develop a comprehensive community-based <a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" href=\"https:\/\/crosscut.com\/environment\/2021\/01\/washington-hosts-first-climate-assembly-united-states\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">climate plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Representing every congressional district in the state, assembly members will convene from January through March to discuss climate pollution, reach a consensus and forward their recommendations to the state Legislature. Experts including Atkinson have been invited to share research and make policy recommendations related to different aspects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n<p>In February, Atkinson also gave talks on eco-anxiety at the University of Massachusetts&rsquo;s <a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" href=\"https:\/\/climatechangeinitiative.org\/event\/eco-grief-and-climate-anxiety-managing-the-crisis\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Climate Change Initiative<\/a>, and participated on the keynote panel at the <a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wohesc.org\/program\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Washington\/Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference<\/a> (WOHESC). During WOHESC, the keynote panel explored the theme of &ldquo;Eco-grief and climate anxiety: managing the crisis,&rdquo; which featured Atkinson&rsquo;s podcast <a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drjenniferatkinson.com\/facing-it\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">&ldquo;Facing It,&rdquo;<\/a> Sarah Jaquette Ray&rsquo;s book <i>A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety<\/i>, and Laura Schmidt&rsquo;s work as founder of the Good Grief Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IAS faculty member <a href=\"\/ias\/faculty-and-staff\/jennifer-atkinson\">Jennifer Atkinson<\/a> presented her work on <a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drjenniferatkinson.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">climate anxiety<\/a> at the Washington Climate Assembly.
