{"id":18829,"date":"2020-10-28T09:46:09","date_gmt":"2020-10-28T09:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=18829"},"modified":"2025-06-11T11:57:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T18:57:30","slug":"mentor-chat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/news\/2020\/10\/28\/mentor-chat","title":{"rendered":"Martin Corpus and Candice Plendl share career experiences with students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/mentor-chat.jpg\" alt=\"mentor chat\" class=\"wp-image-25008\" style=\"width:840px;height:420px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Through IAS\u2019s Mentor Chats program, alumni Martin Corpus and Candice Plendl connected with students in Jennifer Atkinson\u2019s BIS 499 Capstone Portfolio course to share their career paths and experiences navigating the professional world as new graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/alumni\/mentoring#mentor-chats\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mentor Chats<\/a>&nbsp;are designed to assist students and recent grads with career exploration, networking, and learning about a range of professional trajectories. Both Corpus and Plendl were happy to share how they\u2019ve translated their education and continued to grow in their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin Corpus graduated in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/undergraduate\/majors\/media-communication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media &amp; Communication Studies<\/a>\u00a0in 2017. He is a freelance, multi-discipline creative media and art specialist who recently earned a Master of Creative Industries degree from Macquarie University in New South Wales, Australia. Corpus offered students these key takeaways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pacing yourself in transitioning between &#8220;life focuses&#8221; is paramount. Rushing into &#8220;what&#8217;s next&#8221; could lead to missing important steps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflection is everything. No artist can move forward without remembering where they&#8217;ve been. Part of my artist identity is sharing my work and encouraging my audience to look at me to see my potential within the creative world rather than allow their perceptions to falsely define it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graduate school gave me a platform to figure myself out and work on my core practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For interview prep, take the time to build answers for questions you don&#8217;t have an answer for yet. Don&#8217;t over script your answers but have an idea in mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Candice Plendl is a 2018 graduate of the Environmental Science \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/earth-system-science\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth System Science<\/a>&nbsp;program and is an Associate at EnviroIssues where she supports various multimodal transportation efforts. Plendl offered this salient wisdom:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Connect with your peers, professors, faculty, and staff. Lean on them for support when needed. 足彩app哪个是正规的se lead to networking opportunities, mentorship, and even friendships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utilize the resources offered to you (that your tuition pays for). Again, the Career Center is available for free up to three (3) years after graduating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do your research and come prepared \u2013 but be authentic. Interviews are a two-way street. You are also interviewing the company\/graduate program\/client to see if&nbsp;<em>they<\/em>&nbsp;are a right fit for&nbsp;<em>you.&nbsp;<\/em>Ask questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Negotiate your pay. Know your worth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saying &#8220;yes&#8221; does not mean it is set in stone. You can always change your path.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>IAS is grateful to Corpus and Plendl for sharing their stories and supporting students\u2019 development.
