IAS faculty member Julie Shayne<\/a> spent her sabbatical editing an open-access book titled Persistence is Resistance: Celebrating 50 Years of Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies<\/i><\/a>. Shayne, who is currently the Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies<\/a> (GWSS) faculty coordinator at UW Bothell, brought together authors<\/a> from twenty-two institutions, including the University of Ghana<\/a> and Universidad Icesi in Cali, Colombia<\/a>. Authors represent GWSS programs at all types of schools, from HBCUs, to women\u2019s colleges, to community colleges<\/a>, to public universities, and contributors are as early career as undergraduate students<\/a>, alongside emeritus faculty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to essays about everything from what to do with a GWSS degree<\/a>, to Indigenous feminisms and GWSS<\/a>, to the continued struggles of women of color in the academy<\/a>, to the history of the first and only Africana Women\u2019s Studies program<\/a>, the book is punctuated by art and answers to \u201cwhy GWSS?\u201d by GWSS students and alumni from around the country, including several UW Bothell students: Elisabeth Schnebele<\/a>, Gabrielle Fox<\/a>, and Madeleine Jenness<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two UW Bothell GWSS alumni figure prominently in the book, Nicole Carter and Estephanie Guzman. Nicole designed the cover, worked as the art editor, illustrator<\/a>, and co-authored the conclusion \u201cDamn Straight We Persisted<\/a>\u201d with Shayne. (Nicole also thought of the title \u201cPersistence is Resistance.\u201d) Estephanie Guzman co-authored an essay with Shayne titled \u201cAn Annotated Bibliography on the History of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies in the Americas<\/a>\u201d and also submitted a sketch titled \u201cMarginalized Cage<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
